I’ve got myself a Blackberry 8320 from Maxis KLCC

Blackberry-curve-8320-maxisAmazed on how do I get myself a Blackberry Curve 8320 instead of 8310 and/or 8300? Last time, I still can’t decide which model to buy, but that day must be my lucky day.

Go browse Maxis Blackberry website. Surprisingly, you wont find Blackberry 8320 in there.

Luckily, I came to Maxis KLCC. Initially, the salesgirl brought a Blackberry 8310 for me. While she keyed in the details and to receive payment, she asked the other girl in front on her regarding the Blackberry 8310.

Her friends shouted, “Why do you give him Blackberry 8310. Go for Blackberry 8320. It’s the same price anyway”.

Lucky me. The BB 8320 comes with Wifi unlike BB 8310 and BB 8300.

Brought back home and play around with it. Need to connect to my Linksys dd-wrt router to the new BB 8320.

First of all, I need to register the Blackberry on the wireless.

Register a BlackBerry device on the wireless network

To register a BlackBerry device on the wireless network, complete the following steps:
  1. On the Home screen, click Options, or click Settings > Options. Note: The location of the Options screen depends on the BlackBerry Device Software and theme you are running on your device.
  2. Complete the step associated with the software version you are running:
    • If you are running BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 or later, click Advanced Options > Host Routing Table.
    • If you are running BlackBerry Device Software 3.7.1 to 4.0.2, click Host Routing Table.
    • If you are running BlackBerry Device Software 3.0 to 3.7, click Network.
    • If you are running BlackBerry Device Software 2.0 to 2.7, click Network Settings.

Note: Some users running BlackBerry Device Software 3.7.1 might find the Register Now option on the Network screen menu.

  3. Display the menu and click Register Now. Your BlackBerry device connects to the wireless network.

To register a RIM 850 device, RIM 857 device, RIM 950 device, or RIM 957 device on the Mobitex or DataTac networks, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Home screen, click Options.
  2. Click Network Settings.
  3. Verify that the Roaming field is set to the appropriate country.
  4. Verify that the Radio field is set to On.
  5. Click the trackwheel and select Register Now.
  6. Click the trackwheel and select Save Options. Your RIM device connects to the wireless network. Once it is registered, the RIM device will display Active in the Status field.

The rest is history. I start to configure and install a lot of stuff.

Maxis Blackberry - Only EDGE, no 3G?

UPDATE: I bought myself a Blackberry Curve 8320 from Maxis for RM1999.

I was thinking to get myself a Blackberry 8707v. But the drawback is that Blackberry 8707v only provide internal memory, 64MB.

And yes, it’s from Maxis Blackberry for Enterprise, not the Celcom-Vodafone Blackberry Powertools.

Now, Maxis offered many ‘updated’ Blackberry devices available from selected Maxis stores.

Sadly, no Blackberry 3G (except 8707v) offered. All with EDGE connectivity, the fastest of 128Mbps.

Should I wait for Blackberry Bold? It comes with HSDPA. Or maybe I could just live along with two mobile phone.

  1. Maxis – For voice only
  2. Celcom – For only data plan, especially with Celcom Powertools plan

Need to finalize this, by myself.

Speed Test: Did Streamyx upgrade my current 1Mbps to 2Mbps?

Really, it’s getting faster now. I did check it on:

http://www.speed.jaring.my/index.html

http://202.188.95.52:8080/speedometer/

I get the result of download speed of 1.5Mbps, which I can say considerably fast. As it’s impossible that Streamyx offers a dedicated 1.5Mbps instead of the hearsay of ‘best effort basis’, I’m pretty much stunned.

Maxis Broadband vs Celcom Broadband (Wireless, Wired, 3G, HSDPA, EDGE, GPRS)

Mobility is a must. My main concern is to be online anytime anywhere. Starbucks now is not an option. I do have Streamyx at home. Alternative to Streamyx? Haven’t found any.

But sometimes when I’m out from the office and home, there’s an urgency to check email. That’s why I’m looking for some juicy offer from these telco.

Use simple maths. Which one is cheaper? Absolutely Celcom. But I heard too much about their bad service.

And Maxis, why they don’t just lower their 3G montly unlimited service? RM120 is still expensive. I’m sure if Maxis can lower it down to RM68, everybody will subscribe to it. Some even says Maxis Broadband sucks with a lot of complaints!

Digi broadband? Havent’ heard about it yet. However, U-mobile broadband looks tempting.

This page may not serve much information regarding this battle. You may find a lot more interesting Maxis, Celcom, Digi, U-mobile discussion on tech forum such as LowYat.net and MyPDACafe.com or other relevant websites.

Don’t worry, you can always discuss and share about their coverage, promotion, plans, problems such as wireless issue or even DNS issue here. We’re looking forward to hear such complaints such as “What? Celcom broadband wireless very slow”, or “Subscribing to Maxis broadband wireless is not worth it. Their coverage is so poor”, or “When will Digi rollout their 3G and the newest Digi broadband service?”. We must ensure that we must push telco provider.

We as consumer have our rights to choose the best broadband provider!
